Being an international student is an experience that presents so many positive opportunities for careers and personal development, but it is not without its own set of unique issues:
- Hostile environment – UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department of the Home Office require all Universities to report students for low attendance, forcing University staff to act as border guards within a system of surveillance under the hostile environment and turning our learning environments into policing zones.
- International Student Fees – International students are expected to pay up to four times as much as UK students, despite studying the same course.
- Increasing Visa Fees – The cost to apply for a Tier 4 student visa has consistently increased and is £348. International students must also pay a healthcare surcharge which has recently increased to £300.
