Many cultures have extended families with which they are extremely close, as close as they are with immediate family. The death of a close friend should be grounds for extenuating circumstances. The death of someone can really affect the mental health of a student and it's not fair that they should have to carry on like normal especially during exam season

Following a previous submission to Change It - https://www.liverpoolguild.org/thestudentvoice/university-to-pay-for-doctors-letters-7586 - the Student Officer team began working on changing the Extenuating Circumstances process. Past Guild Officers proposed a system of self-certifying extenuating circumstances with the University. Following this, during the pandemic the University did begin to practise self-certification, which was well-received by students and was found to be an effective system. The University have since reverted back to their old system again. The Guild believes that self-certification is still needed because the more flexible approach allows for greater support of students who are struggling, reduces waiting times and allows for greater consistency in the process. The Student Officer team are continuing to lobby the University for this.
