The Band room is currently not available, are there other places to practice?

Yes, there are a number of studios across the city that come pre-equipped with gear, most notably (and affordably) Pirate Studios and Vulcan Studios.

How do I book out the Band Room?

Members of Bandsoc (memberships can be purchased here) can book out the Band Room for 2 hours a week from Guild Reception (160 Mount Pleasant). You can go to the reception desk in person or call them on 0151 794 6868

What's in the Band Room?

We have a fully equiped band practise room with a full drumkit, amps and bass amps, a keyboard, PA, mics and mic stands. Please treat the equipment with care and respect, as we have enough on our plates without running all over town getting gear fixed

How do I form a band?

There are many ways to begin band-forming. One of the best ways is to make friends with like-minded musicians at Bandsoc events and then try a jam and see what happens. We usually hold social events at the start of the academic year to meet fellow musicians and get to know the society. However, if you know what you're looking for, you can post on our Facebook group or use our database of Bandsoc members, the Big Match, to search for bandmates

Are solo performers welcome?

Yes! We hold regular open mic and acoustic nights, as well as our famous Battle of the Acoustics, please come and show us your music!

What sorts of bands do you have?

Pretty much all kinds! We've had every shade of rock from indie to metal, along with a fair few jazz and funk bands, and a lot of bands that defy easy categorisation. Bandsoc is open to all musicians of all genres!

Is Bandsoc only for music students?

Not at all. While many music students do choose to get involved with Bandsoc, the majority of our community is made up of non-music students. Anyone of any ability is welcome in Bandsoc

I am a beginner and not sure if I should join?

It is never too late to start making music and we get all kinds of musicians at different levels in their playing, so you can meet other people who are starting out as well. Try and start a band with people around the same skill level so you get the most out of the society experience and figure out how to make music together.

Do I have to join a band?

We like people joining bands, but we don't force anyone to. You are free to just come along to listen and chat, we now also offer a Fan-membership at a discounted price where you can stay in touch with our events and support the bands.

I want to learn an Instrument, do you give lessons?

No, sorry, we are not teachers, we just bring people together who want to make music, giving them a practise room and a stage.

Is this where I sign up to be in an orchestra?

Our friends at LUMS run organised orchestras, choirs and concert bands, as well as the Big Band, should you prefer larger, more regulated, ensembles. Many of us, however, are members of both LUMS and Bandsoc, so don't let that stop you joining us!

Can I hire one of your bands?

Bandsoc is not an agency, and does not supply bands to promoters. Neither can we reccomend bands, as our committee must be seen to be impartial for our Battle of the Bands, amongst other reasons. If you wish to hire performers, we encourage you to post on our Facebook group, although we do ask that you make it very clear whether or not you are intending to pay the musicians for their hard work

Can I borrow equipment?

No equipment is to be removed from the Band Room without the explicit written permission of the Bandsoc committee. The Band Room must be kept in working order at all times, so that bands can use it to rehearse. The only exception to this is when Bandsoc events are being held, as we hope that our members will be attending our events
