Hey everyone!

I’m Chioma, the current secretary for the Afro-Caribbean Society (ACS) 2022/2023. I still can’t believe the year has flown by so quickly, so I’ll be writing a quick summary of what we established during this tenure.

Incredibly proud of collaborating and hosting events with ACS societies outside Liverpool (Chester ACS and Bangor) to hosting an incredible career talk with The Stack world’s Sharmadean Reid, we hope every single one of our ACS members has enjoyed and learned a thing or two from the events we’ve had so far!

Past Events:

1. Debate Night

Our first event which had such an amazing turnout was the Games Night, which we used as an opportunity to introduce our committee roles to the society. The Games Night involved several interactive games hosted by Daniel Sowunmi and planned by our amazing Events Executive, Adawa Awanayah.

2. Social Event: Sip and Event

Using the theme of ‘identity’, our next event was a Sip and Paint hosted in collaboration with The BLAC collective and Uni of Liverpool’s art society. Using this time as a moment to relax, have a drink and discover what identity meant to each of our members, this event was a nice one ending with a nominated winner of the night.

3. Social Event: ACS Debate Night

This event served as an avenue for committees and society members to chat about topics that they felt passionate about.

4. Culture Ball

Pairing nicely with our earlier theme of identity, we collaborated with BME Medics Liverpool to hold a Culture Ball in February to celebrate the difference. With several live entertainment performances, a culture fashion walk, and opportunities to learn about other cultures outside the ACS, we couldn’t be any prouder of our members for turning up and celebrating what their culture means to them.

5. Take Me Out

With Valentine’s around the corner, we were able to successfully host the annual Take Me Out event with the ACS societies of Chester and Bangor. Serving as an opportunity for the singles to get to know each other a bit more, the members were able to find out about each other’s red and green flags.

6. Scavenger Hunt

Having done most of our events indoors, we worked together with ACS to create an activity-packed Scavenger Hunt. With members in attendance given a list of key sights in Liverpool, attendees were tasked with the challenge of walking around and taking a selfie of themselves in the given location with the aim of being the first to do so and coming back to the meeting point.

7. Career Event: ‘How to be a student leader’ with Sharmadean Reid.

With this being our first in-person careers event, we were elated to have the founder and CEO of the Stack World, Sharmadean Reid on campus with us to deliver a talk on ‘How to be a Student Leader’. The session provided us with loads of insight into developing self-identity, building a vision, and becoming a leader.

It’s been a great year and we hope everyone enjoyed the events!
