Oba's blog: A Walk into the Past...
And so it falls to me to recount my former escapades as bright-eyed Fresher, experiencing this city in all its splendour for the first time. In order for you to follow me on my nostalgic adventure, I will set the scene for you as best I remember it…
It was the year 2010 - The Hurt Locker had won everything at the 82nd Academy Awards, Justin Bieber’s Baby was still stuck in our heads and we were all chomping at the bit for that slender iPhone 4.
Perhaps the most poignant element of life in that bygone year was that I arrived at this University while our Guild still functioned in its former state – the old Guild building. Now, it is important to note that while the location has not changed – it was a £14 million refurbishment – The Guild, and virtually everything within it, did.
Gone was the atmosphere emerging from the archaic corridors of disrepair and in its stead came a whole new executed vision. This was typified by the level of technology available to students in our bookable rooms, the ‘shake and bake’ room where one can get down to their favourite disco beats while they hone in on their cupcake creating skills if they are so inclined to the roof garden and the bees that reside within it and the Cellar nightclub - a 400+ capacity nightclub right on your doorstep.
Moving swiftly on to the dénouement of this rather brief but wistful gaze into the past, it is fair to say that the overriding message of this tale is a plea to you to make the most of it. We take what we have now as given, and not without cause, and there is no cause withholding you from using all that we have at our disposal.
You can choose to use this building and all within it as a vehicle for your own interpersonal mobility. Step out of your comfort zone if you so wish, make your entrance into this city a story you’ll remember and crack on with whatever path you choose to embark on.
