2018 Guild Summit Update:

On April 24th 2018, an idea was submitted by a student via Change It entitled “Abortion Rights - Liverpool Guild is Pro-Choice!”

After having received more than 20 ‘up votes’ this idea was discussed on October 23rd 2018 at our initial democratic decision-making body, Guild Summit.

On this occasion Summit was unable to reach consensus on whether the idea should become Guild policy. Usually, this would result in the issue being put to the wider student body as a preferendum (a vote with three or more options).

The Guild’s Democracy Team concluded that on this idea, there is no logical multi-option vote and thus advised that the Guild’s Trustee Board call a ‘yes/no’ referendum on this issue. The referendum would have taken place during NUS Delegate Election week (w/c 19th November).

As the Trustee vote on this proposal was conducted over email - outside of an ordinary meeting, the Guild’s constitution required unanimous support to be approved. One Trustee voted ‘no’ and so the decision to call a referendum has been deferred to the next Trustee Board meeting (December 13th 2018) where only a majoritarian vote will be required. As a result, any campus vote on this issue will not take place until 2019.
