Hey Everyone!
With less than a month until Freshers, things here at the Guild are getting pretty busy with planning for Welcome Week 2016. We’ve got great acts like Professor Green lined up and plenty of activities for everyone to really get into the spirit of starting the 2016-2017 year. However, during this planning phase, it has become almost unavoidable in reminiscing about my own Freshers experience.
As an international student coming to the UK for the first time, Freshers was a very interesting experience. Back in my day (God, I feel old), the Guild was still undergoing renovations so our Freshers events were held in Abercromby Square. The first meet and greet with the Student Officers was a unique experience. The sunshine, the grass and all those eager new faces made it seem more like a picnic than an orientation event. Plus, the Freshers Fair was interesting as it was a maze of societies all trying to tell you why you should chose them.
One of the things I regret about my first week was not attending any of the Welcome Week events. Back in first year I was shy and experiencing a culture shock and I just retreated into books and video games. I missed out on all the fun and bonding that my flatmates were doing (especially the drinking games). To be fair, I wasn’t particularly a music fan nor did I drink back then so I felt a little excluded from all the events being held. This year however, we have a host of activities with and without alcohol as well as a range of fun Give it a Go sessions that you can join.
I did however take the opportunity to get involved in my second year. The Guild had just been reopened and there were loads of great things going on. It is one of my most treasured university memories. So even if you missed out on last year’s Welcome Week or if you are coming back for another great year at Liverpool DO NOT MISS WELCOME WEEK at the GUILD. It’s definitely the place to be.
